Jethobudho rice (जेठो बुढो चामल), also known as Pokhareli Jethobudho, is a traditional aromatic rice variety primarily cultivated in the Pokhara Valley of Nepal. Renowned for its distinct aroma, softness, and flavor, this rice is highly valued among local consumers who are willing to pay a premium for its superior quality. The production of Jethobudho involves participatory breeding, initiated to enhance traits such as post-harvest quality and disease resistance. In 2006, an improved version of this rice was officially released as "Pokhareli Jethobudho," marking it as the first high-quality aromatic rice variety in Nepal developed through such an approach.
Jethobudho rice is typically grown at elevations between 600 to 900 meters and holds a significant place in Nepal’s rice cultivation, which covers 1.46 million hectares of farmland. Its unique qualities make it a preferred choice for many Nepali households, and its increasing demand reflects a shift toward aromatic rice varieties. While locally cherished, Jethobudho also shows promise in broader markets, thanks to the consistency and quality ensured through modern breeding techniques. Its strong cultural and economic importance underscores its vital role in both local diets and Nepal's agricultural economy.
