Cardamom

Cardamom, particularly black cardamom, is a key cash crop in Nepal, primarily cultivated in the eastern hilly regions like Taplejung, Ilam, and Panchthar. Nepal is one of the world's largest producers, with an annual output of around 5,000 to 6,000 metric tons. Cultivated under shaded conditions with minimal chemical inputs, the crop is harvested between August and November.

Domestically, cardamom is used in traditional medicine, cuisine, and rituals. However, the majority is exported, mainly to India and other South Asian and Gulf countries, making it a significant source of foreign exchange.

Challenges include price fluctuations, pest infestations, and climate change, but there are opportunities in improving cultivation practices, processing, and market access to boost production and income. Despite these challenges, cardamom remains crucial to Nepal's agricultural economy.
